DR GARRET ROBLES is the principal dentist and founder of MYTOOTHDOCTOR®.
He is a highly accomplished general dentist with a deep-seated passion for children’s dentistry, Indigenous oral health, and special care dentistry. Known for his compassionate approach and pioneering spirit, Dr Garret has dedicated his career to making best practice dental care accessible to regional, remote, and vulnerable communities across North Queensland.
Early Career & Academic Excellence
Dr Garret completed his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree at the University of the Philippines, graduating with distinction after placing 1st in the 2001 Philippine Dental Board Examinations. In 2002, he pursued postgraduate training in Paediatric Dentistry at the Philippine Children’s Medical Centre - and consider himself blessed with the opportunity to serve at both institutions as a hospital staff dentist and a Clinical Assistant Professor in Paediatric and Community Dentistry.
Driven by his university’s core values of honour, excellence, and service, Dr Garret opened his first private practice right inside his community's local fish market—ensuring market vendors and their families had access to affordable, high-quality care. For a decade, he successfully managed this practice alongside visiting children's dentistry roles across Manila, fondly remembering the days he would head home with fresh fish and produce bartered by his grateful patients.
Moving to North Queensland
In 2012, Dr Garret moved to Australia to join his wife, Mary Ann, a fisheries policy and international law of the sea research academic at the University of Wollongong. Upon completing his Australian Dental Council Certificate, the couple packed up a dollar-a-day hire motorhome and drove north to Townsville for work, travelling with their beloved dog, Bear.
Dr Garret initially joined 1300SMILES on Fulham Road in Pimlico before transitioning to academia in 2015 as a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry at James Cook University (JCU), where he took on a lead clinical placement teaching role.
Pioneering Mobile & Accessible Dentistry
To prove to his dental students that a mobile practice model could be both impactful and sustainable, Dr Garret founded Project Outback Dental (POD) Pty Ltd® in 2016—North Queensland’s very first mobile dental practice. He later established MYTOOTHDOCTOR® as a permanent Townsville base for his outback clients wishing to see him in town.
Aligned with Australia’s National Oral Health Plan, Project Outback Dental® targets four key priority populations:
- People who are socially disadvantaged or on low incomes
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Regional and remote communities
- Individuals with additional and/or specialised healthcare needs
For over a decade, POD served as the trusted, outsourced dental provider for the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS). The practice's specialised dental van regularly visits regional aged care facilities, as well as boarding school accommodations for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students in Townsville and Abergowrie. For this unwavering commitment to rural and remote Queensland, Dr Garret was honoured with the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) Dentist of the Year Award in 2018.
Special Interests & Collaborative Care
Dr Garret maintains credentialing at the Townsville Mater Private Hospital, allowing him to treat young children and patients with special needs under general anaesthetic. He is a strong advocate for teledentistry, utilising digital consultations to facilitate timely referrals to Brisbane-based Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry and Special Needs Dentistry for complex medical cases. He also collaborates closely with local Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial and ENT Surgeons on carefully planned joint theatre cases.
He is incredibly grateful for the trusted referral network he has built with colleague general dentists, Dental Therapists (DTs), Oral Health Therapists (OHTs), and allied health and medical professionals across the Townsville region, Mt Isa, Bowen, the Whitsundays, and the Atherton Tablelands.
