DR GARRET ROBLES completed his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree from the University of the Philippines, with a certificate of distinction for placing 1st in the Philippine Dental Board Examinations in 2001. He pursued a postgraduate training in Paediatric Dentistry at the Philippine Children’s Medical Centre in 2002, and had the opportunity to teach at both institutions as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Peadiatric Dentistry and Community Dentistry and hospital staff dentist.
He also enjoyed a good decade of starting up and managing his own private practice, with visiting children's dentistry roles to a number of dental centres in Manila. Ingrained from his university's core values of honor, excellence and service, Garret opened his first private practice at his community's local fish market allowing vendors and their families to get top-notch but affordable and accesible dental care. Garret misses the years he enjoyed going home after a good barter of fish and produce from his loving patients.
In 2012 Garret moved to Australia to join his wife Mary Ann, a fisheries policy and international maritime law specialist and research academic at the University of Wollongong. On completion of his Australian Dental Council Certificate, Garret and Mary made the decision to move to Townsville for work, driving with their furchild Bear on a dollar-a-day hire motorhome.
Garret initially joined 1300SMILES (now part of Abano Healthcare Group) on Fulham Road in Pimlico before briefly taking on a lead clinical placement teaching role at James Cook University (JCU) as a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry in 2015.
To further inspire his dental students that a mobile dental practice model is sustainable, Garret established Project Outback Dental (POD) Pty Ltd® – North Qld’s first mobile dental practice in 2016, and later MYTOOTHDOCTOR® for his outback clients wishing to see him in Townsville.
Project Outback Dental® targets populations identified by Australia’s National Oral Health Plan 2015–2024 - providing much needed dental services to (1) people who are socially disadvantaged or on low incomes, (2) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, (3) people living in regional and remote Australia, and (4) people with additional and/or specialised health care needs.
For over 10 years, Project Outback Dental® was the outsourced and trusted dental services provider of the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS), and continues to innovate its delivery of oral health services to rural and regional North Queensland communities, schools, and supported accommodations for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students - and more recently to aged care facilities in the region.
For his committed and continuing mobile service delivery in rural and remote Queensland, Dr Robles received the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) Dentist of the Year Award in 2018.
Dr Robles maintains credentialing with the Townsville Mater Private Hospital allowing him to treat children of all ages, and members of the family with special needs under a general anaesthetic. Garret is always very thankful for referrals coming from his colleague general dentists, DTs and OHTs, and allied health and medical professionals in the Townsville region and surrounds, Mt Isa, Bowen, the Whitsundays, and the Atherton Tablelands.
Dr Garret is a very strong advocate of telehealth and teledentistry - facilitating consultations and timely referrals to Brisbane-based public and private Specialist Paediatric Dentists and Specialists in Special Needs Dentistry for the management of more medically complex paediatric cases. He likewise considers himself very blessed to work with local Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial and Specialist ENT Surgeons - on carefully planned and select joint theatre cases.
For continuing professional development and mentorship, Garret maintains membership with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry Queensland Branch (ANZSPD Qld), a member of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT), the Australian Society of Special Care in Dentistry (ASSCID) and the Australian Dental Association (ADAQ).
