As the founder of MYTOOTHDOCTOR Townsville Paediatric and Special Needs Dentistry® and Project Outback Dental (POD) Pty Ltd®, Dr. Garret has been bringing smiles to regional and remote Queensland for more than 10 years. Now, his mobile clinic isn’t just hitting the road — it’s going green.

From Outback Roads to Aged Care Homes

Back in 2015, Dr. Garret left his teaching job at James Cook University to chase a big idea: bring quality dental care to people who couldn’t easily reach a clinic. That’s how Project Outback Dental® was born.

The POD is a 24-foot Jayco Basestation trailer fitted out like a full dental surgery — chair, sterilisation gear, even a mobile X-ray machine. For a decade, it’s been rolling across Northwest Queensland towns, making dental care possible in some of the hardest-to-reach places.

Now, the mission is growing. POD is turning its focus to aged care residents in Townsville, bringing check-ups and treatment directly to people’s homes and facilities.

Meet the Retro-Electric Ride

To keep his mobile setup moving, Dr. Garret drives the Volkswagen ID. Buzz — a futuristic reboot of the classic 1960s Kombi.

“I’ve always loved VWs — even our wedding cake was shaped like my first car, a 1969 Beetle,” he laughs. “The ID. Buzz is fun, practical, and eco-friendly. Perfect for carrying portable dental gear between aged care homes and the Mater Private Hospital.”

And yes — kids who visit the clinic might even score a ride in the Kombi, turning their first dental appointment into a memory worth smiling about.
