Townsville-based mobile dentist Dr. Garret Robles, founder of MYTOOTHDOCTOR Townsville Paediatric and Special Needs Dentistry®, has just taken a big step into the future — by going electric!

After more than a decade of providing much-needed dental care to Outback communities across Northwest Queensland, Dr. Garret’s mobile dental clinic — affectionately known as the POD — is now expanding its services to aged care homes across Townsville. This “dentist to your doorstep” model offers timely, affordable dental care in the comfort of patients' homes or facilities.

A Decade of Community Care — And Growing

Back in 2015, Dr. Garret left his teaching position at James Cook University to launch Project Outback Dental®, aiming to inspire dental graduates to serve remote Queensland towns where access to care was limited.

His mobile clinic — a 24-foot Jayco Basestation — was custom-fitted by local Townsville business Medical and Dental Solutions, and includes everything from a mobile dental X-ray and sterilisation setup to a full dental chair and suction plant.

Now, as POD celebrates its 10-year anniversary, the service has grown to include in-home dental visits to aged care residents across Townsville — bringing quality dental care directly to those who need it most.

Say Hello to the Electric VW Kombi!

To keep the mobile dental service truly mobile, Dr. Garret now uses the Volkswagen ID. Buzz — a fully electric, modern reimagining of the iconic 1960s VW Kombi.

“I’ve always had a love for Volkswagens — our wedding cake was even shaped like my first car, a 1969 VW Beetle,” laughs Dr. Garret. “The ID. Buzz lets me carry portable dental equipment between aged care homes and the Mater Private Hospital. It’s retro, practical, and environmentally friendly — the perfect fit!”

Asked why he swapped his diesel 4x4 for the electric Kombi, Dr. Garret explains, “My wife Mary Ann, a law of the sea and fisheries policy specialist, and our 5-year-old daughter Sofia who is now in pre-prep, both remind me daily that we need to look after the environment.”
